What is a Walleteer?
Dictionary Definition
Wal`let`eer´
n. 1. One who carries a wallet; a foot traveler; a tramping beggar.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary, published 1913 by C. & G. Merriam Co.
This doesn't make sense at first glance. Why would a 'tramping begger' be carrying a wallet, and even be named for the fact? Well the clue is in a little bit of wallet history. Wallets as we know them today only evolved in the 1950's with the advent of credit cards as a way to carry notes and credit cards.
The word "Wallet" was originally used as a term for any type of bag, pouch, or pocket that was used to a carry personal effects. These bags would be used to carry all sorts of things like money, food, "treasures", and "things not to be exposed".
